Slideshow | Festival Choir Ireland tour

Festival Choir creates harmonies and memories in Ireland.

This slideshow was, technically, put together after the end of my term on TommieMedia for the semester. But, as a member of Festival Choir, I got to take one of the very nice TommieMedia Canon DSLRs to Ireland with me to document our choir tour and create this slideshow and let the world take a sneak peek at our travels. It was a very, very good note to end on : )

Slideshow | Day in the life

A day in the life at St. Thomas.

I’ll be honest: I actually stole the idea from the 2011 MN Daily “Day in the Life” slideshow that I stumbled upon last year. So this year, I proposed the idea to the other editors and our only other photojournalist, and she and I decided to go for it. It started as a 12-hour thing, but at the last second we manned (womanned?) up and took on a full day of taking pictures. We both did get a little sleep, but it wasn’t much, at least on my end. The picture above is the last shot of the slideshow, taken at 11:59 p.m. St. Thomas is kind of known for the arches and has a tradition that when someone gets kissed under them at midnight, he/she becomes a “True Tommie.”

A good game played by the Tommie women! I absolutely loved taking pictures during the golden hour for this story.

Audio slideshow | Spring musical

Local students perform in St. Kate’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance.’

This slideshow holds pictures from what was definitely one of my favorite stories to shoot for TommieMedia. There was so much color and action onstage that the only time I put down the camera was to start and stop the audio recorder. I was happy that TommieMedia produced more audio slideshows this semester – I think the audio aspect made the stories much more engaging.

Full coverage | Student creates service

Senior creates job with service-based software.

This story featured senior Solome Tibebu, who is the founder of Cognific, a service-based software that will offer mental health “homework” in a gaming format for young adult patients, as well as an analytics platform for psychotherapists. I absolutely loved working on this story – Solome was very genuine and pleasant to talk to, and I think what she’s doing is amazing.

Full coverage | Diving Invitational

Two divers clinch first-place finishes at St. Thomas Diving Invitational.

The St. Thomas diving team is small, but strong! Diving is one of the more fun sports to photograph, in my opinion.

Full coverage | Student center security

University will not add extra security for student center.

Another story on the new student center! For this one, I got to interview one of St. Thomas’s head honchos – Michael Barrett, associate director of Public Safety. Although there won’t be extra security in the building, Public Safety is making sure students will stay safe.
